- Sd.Kfz.251 is the official designation for a medium armored personnel carrier that was developed in 1937 by the German company Hanomag, based on a 3t half-track, to accompany infantry to tank units.
- The Sd.Kfz.251/22 was developed as a self-propelled anti-tank gun equipped with a 7.5cm anti-tank gun PaK40 in response to an order from the Führer stating that "anti-tank self-propelled guns should be produced using existing vehicles as much as possible." Production began in December 1944 using the Sd.Kfz.251 armored personnel carrier Ausf. D as the base vehicle.
- The Sd.Kfz.251/22 was initially intended for deployment to tank destroyer battalions, armored reconnaissance battalions, and artillery platoons within the armored divisions, and at least 95 vehicles were completed by February 1945.
